Whitburn Colliery Plaque

Whitburn Colliery Plaque

To commemorate the closure of Whitburn Colliery 1968 Bob produced two, 1 mtr square panels each depicting a mining scene designed to fit into recesses of the two limestone gateposts of the former pit gates, the only feature that remains of the coal mine that in its heyday employed almost three thousand men and boys.

One of the first costal pits to close it was situated on the North East coast between Souter light house and Whitburn village.

The project was particularly close to Bob’s heart as both he and his father worked in the mine.

The Memorial was unveiled by The Mayor of South Tyneside cllr. Tracy Dixon, Monday 12 May 2008. The ceremony was attended by many former employees.
