A familiar  character  of  street  life  up  to the mid  1950s the knife  grinder  would sharpen  any cutlery  or scissors  for a  few  pence.  The bicycle  converted  to carry  and  turn  the grindstone  on  which  the  drawing  is  based  can  be found  at  Beamish  Open  Air  Museum.
