Miner & Son

This drawing  typifies the breadwinners of a mining family. A young boy proudly follows in his
father's footsteps to spend his working life in the dangerous environment of the coal mine. Family
involvement in the local pit is sadly evident on memorials to mining disasters. In Northumberland the Hartly disaster claimed the lives of 204 men and boys. All were from the same village and many from the same family, Mrs. Oliver lost a husband and five sons.
