First Day

Pony driving was a difficult job, boys as young as 14 were given this arduous task. In 1900 the pay for this work was about 1/6d (18 new pence) per day. The pony is wearing a leather scull cap which was very light and well ventilated with metal guards to protect it's eyes. In 1913 there were 70,000 working pit ponies.
