Pony driving was a difficult job. Boys as young as 14 were given this arduous task. The young lads were responsible for supplying empty tubs to the men at the coal face and bringing full tubs outbye to the shaft bottom. In 1900 his pay was about 1 shilling & six pence per day. (15 ½ p)
The pony is wearing a leather "pit cap," very light and well ventilated. It was designed to protect the animals head and eyes. In 1913 there were 70.000 working pit ponies in the coal mines of Britain.
