The breadwinner of the family making his place of work safe. Using his hammer to set a wooden prop and lid.  Wooden props would emit a cracking sound when the weight was on, and therefore give sufficient warning of a roof collapse. On the prop behind him hangs his water bottle and oil safety lamp.
The lamp had a dual purpose, as a light source and instrument used to detect the deadly gasses feared by all miners.
