"All rented Coal Board houses were built more or less to the same specification.  All were coal heated with a small fireplace in the front room and one in the living room, the cast iron fireplace with an oven to one side.  The back yard consisted of an outside toilet, a coal house and wash house.  Kids organised their own form of athletics by running the length of the back lane on the roofs of these out buildings and leapt over the gaps, much to the annoyance of the householders, especially if the Netty was engaged." - Bob Olley
