"In the 1800 & 1900s the men and boys of whole families worked down the same mine and when disasters occurred, often members of the same family perished. The Hartley Colliery disaster of 1862 claimed the lives 204. One verse of poem written at the time reads: - A little further down the row. To Mrs. Oliver’s I did go. Three on the bed, one on the floor. Two on the table near the door.
This print of one of my early pen drawings depicts a father with his son, a pony driver." - Bob Olley
