"All new trainee miners were taught first aid as part of their underground training and were presented with a certificate and a St John first aid book, overmen deputies and other officials were trained to a much higher level. Haulage was by far the main cause of accidents. Anyone badly injured on the coal face had to be man handled off the face, loaded onto a stretcher tram and transported to the shaft bottom by a team of his workmates, some pulling on a rope at the front, others pushing. In the event of an accident all haulage in the district was stopped."
