"The 2pm shift we would ride at 9pm. Making sure to be the first out of the cage, we would burst through the ventilation doors, run down the pit heap, quickly deposit our cap lamps on the charging rack and into the dirty end of the pit baths, off with the pit clothes and into the showers, a quick swill down then through the clean side getting dried on the way. All this haste was to catch the 9.30pm Economic bus that ran from Whitburn to Shields that would get us into the New Crown pub for the last pint before last order at 10pm."
